Student arrested after shooting at Miami Northwestern High School

MIAMI, Florida. — Authorities confirmed the arrest of a Miami-Dade public school student Friday night after they said another student was shot multiple times at Miami Northwestern Senior High.

Video emerged showing students fighting before a teenager pulled a gun and shot 15-year-old Devin Reeves in the parking lot of a Miami-Dade school campus Thursday night after a basketball game between Miami Central and Miami Northwestern high schools .

Police said Reeves was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition after the shooting.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools officials confirmed Saturday that both Reeves and the suspected shooter are students. It is unclear which school both attend.

Activist Renita Holmes said she was heartbroken.

“A kid going to school can get a gun from another kid, a kid can get a gun from an old man.” “They're out there,” said Holmes, who lives in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood, and added that it was “easy” for children to “get guns.”

Tangie Sands said she panicked and ran to Northwestern, 1100 NW 71st St., to see if her son was safe. She was, but she believes more needs to be done to protect students.

“Every child and every person who enters this school campus must be tested,” Sands said. He fears that without improvements “this will continue.”

A Local 10 News team was at the school Thursday where officers collected evidence and focused on a backpack that was left behind.

“A kid going to school can get a gun from another kid, a kid can get a gun from an old man. “They're just out here,” said Holmes, who lives in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood, and added that it was “easy” for children to “get their hands on guns.”

According to police, two cars were ultimately towed from that school's parking lot.

Authorities have not released the identity of the suspected shooter and the motive for the shooting has not yet been revealed.
