At least 21 miners die in a landslide in Tanzania

At least 21 people died after a landslide in a mine in northern Tanzania, the country's President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, announced this Sunday (14).

“It is with great sadness that I received reports of the death of more than 21 people following a landslide at Ng'alita mine in Bariadi district, Simiyu region,” Samia said on social network X.

“Our defense and security agencies, working with regional leaders, continue to make efforts to find additional bodies still trapped in the rubble,” he added.

It is not immediately clear when the accident occurred and there is no information on the number of miners trapped.

Flash floods caused by torrential rains associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon are occurring in Tanzania and several East African countries such as Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.

Last month, 76 people died in landslides in the town of Katesh, located in a mountainous region in northern Tanzania. (AFP)
