Checking yourself at home: it's possible with this revolutionary new device – Geeko – Le Soir

You no longer have to go to the doctor if you have a minor flu: you will soon be able to carry out a health check yourself from the comfort of your own home.

At CES 2014, the trade fair that has become a showcase for global technological innovation, Withings is unveiling BeamO, a brand new health check-up tool that could well revolutionize remote consultations or the treatment of simple colds.

A multiscope. That's what the French brand calls this new health check-up tool. It has four functions. First of all, a non-contact thermometer that can measure body temperature by pointing it at the forehead.

Next is a medical-grade electrocardiogram (EKG), which detects irregularities in your heartbeat by simply placing your two index fingers on the sensors. Likewise, an oximeter measures the oxygen levels in your blood.

Finally, it is equipped with a digital stethoscope that can listen to your heart and lungs by placing it on your ribcage, just below your chest.

This temperature, heart and respiratory check can be completed in less than a minute, providing a quick and effective health check that is then sent to the application developed by Withings. The data can also be sent to your doctor, facilitating remote monitoring and opening up the possibility of increased teleconsultation.

Up to eight people can use the same BeamO, which could come in handy for pooling the cost of the item (€249.95), which is significantly more expensive than a traditional thermometer. It is not certain that all households can afford to purchase this device if it is not covered by health insurance.

It will be available in stores from summer 2024, although Withings is still waiting for European CE marking and approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
