Hatton explained that the reason for his visit was to inspect the areas of the Sierra de Bahoruco and Jaragua National Parks, where renovations are being carried out, among other things, in monitoring and protected areas with a view to the development of Pedernales and its management in two areas.

Together with his work team and Pável Isa Contreras, Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, he also arrived in Los Arroyos, where a control and surveillance facility is being built that will have three rooms, a living room and a warehouse, an access point to the park .

During their visit, Hatton and Isa Contreras were received by the Governor of Pedernales, Altagracia Brea, with whom they spoke about promoting tourism in this southwestern province and the need to maintain sustainable development over time in favor of natural resources.

He later moved to Hoyo de Pelempito, Las Mercedes and Bahía de Las Águilas, where he talked to the park rangers before moving to the Oviedo Lagoon.

The environmental official explained that all of these protected areas would welcome tourists to enjoy the place and know that the Dominican Republic is much more than just a sun and beach destination.

With an area of ​​one thousand square kilometers and a length of 70 kilometers, spanning the provinces of Bahoruco, Barahona and Pedernales, Sierra de Bahoruco is considered one of the most valuable parks in the country and is part of the Jaragua-Bahoruco Biosphere Reserve. -Enriquillo from UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

It is home to a wide variety of forests up to two thousand meters high, as well as a limestone subsoil and a rich flora and fauna, which includes about 180 species of orchids, 32 of which are endemic.

Jaragua Park in the southernmost part of Pedernales is now part of the first UNESCO biosphere reserve in the Dominican Republic.

In this national park you can see manatees, turtles, hawksbill turtles and at least 400 species of plants, including tropical forests, cacti, mangroves and wetlands, which are home to more than 130 species of birds, 10 of which are endemic.
