Pompous celebration in the Sultanate: Prince of Brunei celebrates wedding for ten days…

One of the world's most eligible bachelors is getting married. Prince Abdul Mateen celebrates this for ten days, including a procession in an open Rolls Royce.

In the extremely wealthy Sultanate of Brunei, Prince Abdul Mateen married his fiancee Anisha Rosnah during ten days of lavish celebrations. The 32-year-old, who was once considered one of Asia's most eligible bachelors, is the tenth son of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. He is therefore not the heir to the throne – but the lavish celebration, including a procession through the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, in an open Rolls Royce, was still fit for a king.

Thousands of people occupied the streets and applauded the newlyweds. The wedding celebrations began on January 7th and were scheduled to end on Tuesday. Prince Mateen published photos of the various ceremonies on social media, where he has millions of followers. “Thank you for celebrating with us on this special occasion. It means a lot to us,” he wrote. His wife Anisha is the granddaughter of an important advisor to the Sultan, considered one of the richest men in the world. She reportedly owns a fashion brand and parts of a tourism company.

Compliments on the bride's elegance

“Anisha Rosnah mesmerized guests in a simple white long-sleeved wedding dress and an exquisite jewel-embellished wedding veil that covered her hair,” wrote Harper's Bazaar Arabia, praising the bride's elegance. “To complete the look, Anisha wore a tiara embellished with diamonds.”

Foreign guests also traveled to the sultanate for the wedding, including Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the Borneo Bulletin newspaper reported. Representatives from several royal families also participated, including those from Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

One of the richest countries – with an authoritarian sultan

The Islamic Sultanate of Brunei is located on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo, the other parts of which belong to Malaysia and Indonesia. Thanks to its large oil and gas reserves, Brunei is one of the richest countries in the world. At the same time, the human rights situation is repeatedly criticized. The authoritarian sultan began introducing Sharia law in 2014. There are severe penalties for homosexuality in particular. (APA/dpa)
