Bregenz (VLK) – According to the current report of the State Statistical Office, 410,307 people were registered with their main residence in Vorarlberg as of December 31, 2023. Population growth in Vorarlberg will decrease slightly at the end of 2023 compared to previous years. With an increase of 3,421 people, the growth is 1,162 people less than on December 31, 2022. In addition to the birth balance (balance of births minus deaths), population development is influenced by the migration balance (balance of immigration minus departures). In 2023, population growth can be attributed to a preliminary positive birth balance with an increase of 601 people and the calculated migration balance with an increase of 2,820 people. The migration balance therefore contributes significantly more to the increase in population development, with 82 percent, than the birth surplus, with around 18 percent.

A total of 84,490 foreigners from more than 158 different nations live in Vorarlberg. Its percentage of the resident population is 20.6 percent and increased by 0.6 percentage points compared to the previous year. Citizens from crisis regions (Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria and Ukraine) represent 2.8 percent of the total population.

The population of Vorarlberg is made up of 202,457 men and 204,429 women, resulting in a gender ratio of 990 men to 1,000 women. The proportion of children (population under 15 years old) is 15.8 percent, the proportion of people of working age between 15 and 64 years old is 65.7 percent. The elderly (population aged 65 and over) represent 18.5 percent.

As of September 30, 2023, an additional 3,421 primary residences have been added. This is 0.8% more than the previous year. In terms of increase, the Rhine Valley recorded almost three-quarters of the growth, with an increase of 2,528 people. 300 more (+0.5 percent) citizens

The state's population increased by 33,960 citizens (+9.0%) in the last ten years.
