The number of irregular entries into the EU rose by 17% to a total of 380,000 migrants in 2023, the highest level since 2016.
The number of irregular entries into the European Union rose by 17% in 2023 compared to the previous year and reached the highest level since 2016, the European border surveillance agency Frontex said on Tuesday.
Frontex, based in Warsaw, said this was a “significant increase in the number of irregular border crossings in 2023, the highest since 2016,” and said that number had risen to 380,000, of which 41% came via the central Mediterranean. This annual data confirms “a consistent upward trend over the past three years,” the agency said in a news release.
Two other busiest migration routes in 2023 were through the Western Balkans (26%) and the Eastern Mediterranean (16%). “Last year, Syrians were responsible for more than 100,000 irregular border crossings, the highest number of any nationality,” followed by Guineans and Afghans, Frontex says. “These top three nationalities accounted for more than a third of all discoveries,” the statement said. Around 10% of irregular entries were made by women and almost as many by minors.
