China strongly opposes US approval of Taiwan related law, foreign ministry spokesman says

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) — China deeply regrets and strongly opposes the United States' adoption of the so-called Taiwan-related law and has made solemn statements to the U.S. side, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

It was reported that the US House of Representatives recently passed the Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act of 2023, which requires the Secretary of the Treasury to use US influence in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support Taiwan's membership in that organization.

In response to a related question, spokesman Mao Ning said at a daily press conference that the United States passed the so-called law in order to blatantly interfere in China's internal affairs and attempt to manipulate the Taiwan issue for political purposes in order to ” “two Chinas”. and “one China, one Taiwan.” “We deeply regret and firmly reject this and have made solemn statements to the US side.”

“Taiwan has no basis, reason or right to join the UN or any other international organization whose membership is limited to sovereign states,” Mao stressed.

Mao pointed out that on October 25, 1971, the 26th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) overwhelmingly passed Resolution 2758, which “decides to restore all the rights of the People's Republic of China and to recognize the representatives of its government as sole ones.” . legitimate representatives of China before the United Nations” and immediately expel the representatives of the Taiwanese authorities “from the place they are illegally occupying.”

UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 resolved once and for all politically, legally and procedurally the issue of the representation of all of China, including Taiwan, before the United Nations. He also made it clear that there could only be one seat that represented China in the United Nations, and that was the People's Republic of China, Mao said.

For more than half a century, Resolution 2758 has been observed by the United Nations, specialized agencies such as the IMF and other international and regional organizations, Mao said, adding that all issues related to the Taiwan region's participation in the activities of international organizations should be managed according to the one-China principle.

The United States must fully understand the highly sensitive nature of the Taiwan issue and immediately stop using it to interfere in China's internal affairs, send false signals to the “Taiwan independence” forces, and undermine China-US relations Stability in the Taiwan Strait, Mao said.
