A chairman of the generations at the table of the Trois-Rivières municipal council –

The chairman of the generations returns to the municipal council of Trois-Rivières, as a resolution drafted by municipal councilor Dany Carpentier will be presented during the meeting on Tuesday evening.

She supports the call of the “Mothers on the Frontline” movement and promises to “reserve a place called Chair of Generations at the council table, with the aim of reflecting the values of inclusivity and environmental protection and motivating our city's children to do so.” Get involved in the community.”

The small chair painted by children is intended to be a symbolic voice of future generations at the decision-making table.

A year ago, the Mères au Front collective wanted to get someone onto the Trois-Rivières municipal council. The prolonged absence of Mayor Jean Lamarche had postponed the project.

“We have a good time there, we have a good hearing from the municipal council, especially from the mayor,” explained Mères au Front co-spokeswoman Annie Provencher. “We are also taking advantage of the opportunity and want to work with the elected local representatives. I'm trying to get things done. We are aware that not everyone has the same awareness or values regarding the environment and the idea is not to hurry but to sow small seeds and the chair is one of them.”

In the plenary session on Tuesday afternoon, a majority of council members were in favor of the resolution. However, some questioned a paragraph that recalls that the function of the elected official “is established by the regulation on the code of ethics and professional conduct of elected municipal officials in Trois-Rivières”.

“Having different opinions is normal, but mutual disrespect is less so. I think we're starting the year off on the right foot. I think we can have open, honest discussions, but always with respect. Then it can also be the symbol of this generational presidency, that is, let's maintain a healthy democracy and make decisions that are responsible for the future,” clarified the councilor of the La-Vérendrye district, Dany Carpenter.

The timing of when the generation leader will join the council has not yet been determined, but Dany Carpentier wants it to happen before the summer.

Around 60 cities in Quebec have already passed such a resolution.
