December construction starts and building permit data will be on deck Thursday morning
Investors will analyze December housing starts and building permits data on Thursday to see whether activity in the sector has increased amid falling mortgage rates.
December housing starts, which measure new home construction in the U.S., were expected to have fallen 8.1% last month, according to a FactSet consensus estimate. That would be a decline from a 14.8% increase the previous month.
Building permits, or the number of new housing units approved in the U.S., were expected to have increased to 1.476 million units last month, according to a FactSet consensus estimate. That's up from 1.467 million units previously.

- Discover Financial Services – Shares fell nearly 7% after Discover Financial Services reported fourth-quarter results. The financial services company reported quarterly revenue of $4.20 billion, beating estimates of $4.10 billion, according to analysts surveyed by LSEG. GAAP earnings of $1.54 per share were not immediately comparable.
- Alcoa – Shares fell nearly 3% after the aluminum maker reported fourth-quarter results. Alcoa posted a smaller-than-expected adjusted loss of 56 cents per share, compared with an expected loss of 86 cents per share, according to analysts surveyed by LSEG. Sales of $2.60 billion were in line with estimates.
- HB Fuller – HB Fuller shares fell about 1%. For the fourth quarter, the company reported adjusted earnings of $1.32 per share, above the FactSet consensus estimate of $1.27 per share. Sales of $902.9 million were below expectations of $929.9 million.
