The UN rapporteur calls for the government to call for a ceasefire in Gaza

Madrid, January 18 (EFE). – The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Palestine, Francesca Albanese, defended this Thursday during her visit to Madrid the need “for the Spanish Government to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, because that is what Spanish civil society wants.”

Albanese assured in statements to journalists that Israel was committing war crimes because of “not respecting the principles of proportionality of military action and protection of civilians.”

He believes that what is happening in Gaza is an “ethnic cleansing” and that Israel's attacks on facilities such as hospitals and educational centers create “an apocalyptic and monstrous situation” for the civilian population, “including thousands of children.” , have caused.

“The countries that can exert pressure to reverse this situation are not doing so, as is the case in most European states, with the exception of a few, including Spain.”

“In Spain I feel comfortable because I observe that civil society is very aware of the situation of the Palestinians and journalists write freely, which is not the case in other countries,” said the rapporteur.

“It is necessary for the Spanish government to call for a ceasefire because that is what the Spanish people are demanding and governments must act based on the demands of the population,” he added.

Albanese met this Thursday with the second vice president of the government, Yolanda Díaz; Representatives of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and a delegation of Spanish parliamentarians. EFE
