United Nations, January 19 (Prensa Latina) United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will travel to Uganda today to attend the NAM Summit and the Southern Leaders' Meeting organized by the G77 and China.
While attending the major events, the UN chief will highlight the fundamental role of both the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the G77 and China in promoting international cooperation.
At a time of deep division and increasing geopolitical tensions, his messages will focus on support for multilateralism, renewed peace efforts, financing sustainable development and climate action, and reforming global institutions.
At the same time, he will call on governments to consider his proposal for a new agenda for peace, a plan drawn up by Guterres himself to achieve this desired goal.
As per his agenda in Kampala, the UN chief plans to hold bilateral meetings with several summit participants and will also meet with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
The NAM meeting began on Monday with preparatory conferences for the leaders' meeting and a call for unity and greater cooperation among the countries that make up it.
The ministerial meetings took place on Wednesday and Thursday, while the high-level summit will begin on Friday and end on Saturday.
The NAM consists of 120 countries: 53 from Africa, 39 from Asia, 26 from Latin America and the Caribbean and two from Europe; while 17 nations have observer status.
The G77 and China, in turn, consist of 134 members and are considered the largest and most diverse group in the multilateral field.
In 2023, the alliance was led by Cuba, which will hand over command to the host country this weekend.
