A huge wave of people swept through more than 100 cities in Germany over the weekend to protest against the far right after the scandal last week revealed that some members of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party were advocating the deportation of immigrants. According to the organizers at the demonstration on Saturday More than 250,000 people took part. More marches filled the streets of Berlin and other cities across the country on Sunday morning.
Thousands in Frankfurt: “We are the majority”
More than 35,000 demonstrators took to the streets in Frankfurt on Saturday. Here, as in other cities, there were signs reading “No Man is Illegal,” “Never Again 1933,” and “Hate is Not an Opinion.” “We are united as Democrats against the misanthropes of our country” said the mayor of Frankfurt Mike Josef Participation in the demonstration. I expected not to be alone here. But there are so many of them and not just here, but all the way to the Zeil (Frankfurt shopping street, editor's note). It's a great feeling to know that we are the majority” Meron Mendel, head of the Anne Frank Memorial Foundation in Frankfurt, told Euronews. Tens of thousands of people also marched Hamburg Friday evening to demonstrate against the AfD and other right-wing extremists.
The right-wing extremist event with the plan to deport migrants
Last week, Correctiv reported on a suspected far-right meeting in November attended by members of the extremist Identitarian Movement and the far-right AfD party. A leading member of the Identitarian Movement, the Austrian citizen Martin Sellner, presented his vision of “remigration” for deportations.
The AfD tried to distance itself from the event on the grounds that it had no organizational or financial connection with the event, that it was not responsible for the content of the discussion and that the members who took part were purely personal. However, One of the AfD co-chairs separated from an advisor who was present at the meeting and criticized the message itself.
