Berlin Film Festival.
The Berlin Film Festival announced the titles selected for its official competition and the Encounters competition section in the sidebar on Monday.
A total of 20 films were selected for the international competition, one of the highlights being “La Cocina” by Alonso Ruiz Palacios with Rooney Mara in the lead role. The picture is described as a “kinetic and cinematic love story” set in a single day in a Times Square kitchen. French-Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop returns with Dahomey, a 60-minute documentary about art repatriation, and Hong Sangsoo is in competition with A Traveler's Needs, starring Isabelle Huppert. Scroll down for the full lineup.
The Berlin Film Festival takes place from February 15th to 25th.
The organizers have already announced more than 100 titles in the Panorama, Forum and Berlinale Special sidebars. Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger, a documentary about influential British filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, narrated by Killers of the Flower Moon filmmaker Martin Scorsese, will debut in the Specials sidebar. The film is directed by David Hinton and features rare archival footage from the personal collections of Powell, Pressburger and Scorsese.
Love Lies Bleeding, the latest feature film from British filmmaker Rose Glass, will also be featured in the Specials program. The main actors are Kristen Stewart and Weronika Tofilska. A brief synopsis describes the picture as “a romance full of ego, desire and the American dream.” The film will arrive in Berlin after its debut at Sundance.
It was also previously announced that Scorsese will receive the Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement during this year's festival and Lupita Nyong'o will lead the international jury. The festival opens with the film “Small Things Like These” by Cillian Murphy. The film reveals truths about Ireland's Magdalen Laundries – horrific institutions run by Roman Catholic institutions from the 1820s to 1996, ostensibly to reform “fallen young women.” Set around Christmas in 1985, devoted father and coal merchant Bill Furlong (Murphy) discovers startling secrets kept by the monastery in his town, as well as some shocking truths from his own homeland.
