Coronation Street's Sean Wilson reveals another surprising career change as he continues to move away from his acting roots – 20 years after leaving the soap

Coronation Street's Sean Wilson has revealed another surprising new career move as he continues to move away from his acting roots with the release of a recipe book.

Sean, 58, who played Martin Platt in Corrie from 1985 to 2005, has just published his third book, Jazz Food, which contains 44 recipes.

Sean moved away from the television world and started a cheese business called Artisan Farm in 2009. He then published his second book, Cheddar Gorged.

His new book, Jazz Food, includes recipes like salt-crusted beets and cheddar-wrapped rib-eye steak.

The recipes are accompanied by his paintings of legendary singers Louis Armstrong and Nina Simone, as well as musical suggestions to enrich the cooking experience.

He said: “In its truest form, jazz is American music developed from ragtime and blues. That is a given; But jazz is bigger than that. Yes, that's right, even bigger!

“In many ways we need to take off our fedora because it is also the product of music, art, culture, time, geography and a lot of hard work.”

“The gastronomy is also diverse; a product of good food, art, culture, time, geography and hard work. These cats are in the same lineage and have been bedfellows for many generations.

“Jazz and food are both cultures of their people.” Their development and advancement is directly related to the cool people they love. As culture travels around the world, it changes depending on geographical tastes – you see this in both jazz and food.

“These two genres are closely linked for reasons of culture, enlightenment, pride, flair, individuality, innovation and raw talent.” Both are arts for the common soul and the mark of any true culture is its constant change transformative development.”

Sean is best known for his role as Martin Platt in the ITV series Corrie.

He joined the TV juggernaut in 1985 after unsuccessfully auditioning for the roles of Kevin Webster and Terry Duckworth, and last appeared on the show in 2018.

He also appeared in Dancing on Ice, The Royal, Doctors, Waterloo Road, Casualty, Silent Witness, Dalziel and Pascoe, Mozart's Unfinished and The Great Northern Cookbook commissioned following the success of Sean's first book of the same name.

In 2022, Sean insisted he would never return to Coronation Street as a cast member again after falling in love with his new career as a cheesemaker.

He left because of a story in which his character Martin seduced an underage girl.

In 2018, he briefly reprized his role for a few episodes as part of David Platt's male rape storyline, but said in 2022 that he had no plans to ever return.

Sean says soap bosses insisted his character get involved in the conspiracy that would lead to Martin being branded a “paedophile” in 2005, even though it made him feel “deeply uncomfortable”.

He told The Sun: “I didn't want to do it and suggested they could hire another actor, but the producer insisted.”

“It wasn't for me, so I told them, 'No, I'm not going to do this story and I suggest you maybe think about it again.'

“They came back a few weeks later and said, 'No, we think this story is going to continue.'”

As a result, Sean informed his bosses that he was leaving the series and left the company in 2005.

Sean said it was then announced that he had been fired, which he said was not the case.
