Spain's first Oscar for a non-English language film (as the category was then called) went to José Luis Garci in 1983 for Volver a Volver, although Spain had already received ten nominations since 1958. A decade later, in 1994, Fernando Trueba achieved this for Belle Époque and in 2000 Pedro Almodóvar for All About My Mother. In 2005 Alejandro Amenábar managed it for The Sea Inside. The last nominee was Pain and Glory by Almodóvar in 2020. In total, Spain has achieved 20 nominations in this category, behind only France and Italy. The one in Bayonne is the 21st. Last year, in 2023, the German film “All Things Done” by Edward Berger emerged as the winner, beating out “Argentina 1985” by Santiago Miter.
As has been usual since their meeting in cinemas last summer, Barbie and Oppenheimer dominate the box office and also the awards season, although in this case Christopher Nolan's film outweighs Greta Gerwig's film and there are two strong competitors in Poor Creatures by Yorgos Lanthimos and The Moon Killers by Martin Scorsese, which also makes its protagonist Lily Gladstone (of Siksikaitsitapi and Niimiipuu) the first Native American actress to receive an Oscar nomination. She will have stiff competition against Emma Stone, who could win second place to La La Land for Poor Creatures to make it.
Like every year, there are five nominees for each nomination, except for the Best Picture category, where there are ten. In 2024, “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Barbie,” “Those Who Stay,” “The Assassins of the Moon” and “Master” are in the running for top honors. , Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Creatures and The Zone of Interest.
The reading of the nominations took place in two rounds at 5:30 a.m. local time in Los Angeles (California) and 2:30 p.m. local time on the Spanish peninsula. In the first, nine categories were announced and after a commercial break, just 12 minutes later, the second is here with the other 14 disciplines. Actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid, son of Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid, were in charge of announcing the nominations from Los Angeles and, as usual, the order in which the categories were announced was not known.
The 96th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theater on the Walk of Fame in the heart of Hollywood (Los Angeles).
