“Montreal City Council reiterates the need for two REM stations to be served
the region between the central station and Rue Marc-Cantin,” says the motion, proposed by two independent city councilors and approved by the local councilors.
“The City of Montreal requires the REM station in Griffintown to have its announced location on the railway viaduct south of the Central Station, which runs along Robert-Bourassa Boulevard opposite Mary-Griffin Park; and that a second station be constructed in the upcoming residential development near the intersection of Bridge and Wellington streets,” the application continues.
CDPQ Infra has promised a station for Griffintown, but construction will not begin until 2027 under current plans.
The Plante government had already confirmed that the creation of another REM station was a sine qua non for the development of the Bridge-Bonaventure sector, southwest of the city center. The Quebec government said it would investigate the issue.
“We absolutely need to structure local public transport,” said the elected city planning officer on the executive committee, Robert Beaudry, in front of the local council. “Public transport needs to be funded by other levels of government. »
Craig Sauvé, one of the council members who introduced the motion, emphasized the need to avoid merging the two projects and for CDPQ Infra to build only one station on the border of Griffintown and Bridge-Bonaventure.
