Iran: Detainees announce hunger strike against executions news

In Iran, 61 inmates of the notorious Ewin prison announced a hunger strike following the execution of a dissident protester. Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, who is also in prison, reported this today on her Instagram page that relatives abroad are taking care of her.

Female political prisoners at Ewin Prison are embarking on a joint hunger strike on 25 January to protest the recent executions and to call for an end to the executions.

This morning, Mohammed Ghobadlu, another participant in the nationwide wave of protests in the fall of 2022, was executed. The court holds him responsible for the murder of a police officer during the demonstrations. According to human rights organizations, Ghobadlu was 23 years old. “The news of the execution of Iranian youth triggered a wave of anger and protests in society,” Mohammadi’s Instagram page said.

The death of young Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini sparked mass protests in Iran more than a year ago. For months, young people, in particular, took to the streets to demonstrate against the Islamic system of government. The Islamic Republic has already executed nine people who participated in the protests. Amnesty International described the trials against them as unfair “mock trials”.
