We are not number 1.

Now in its 11th year, a popular annual list of the top restaurants in the United States is being published, and you can forget the praises that critics and pundits regularly heap on New York's food scene like hand-collected sea salt – the average diner appears far less than to be excited.

In fact, Yelp's Top 100 Restaurants in the US for 2024 is content with just one thing: count it! – obscure Midtown East restaurant that represents the Big Apple's wealth of culinary offerings and instead focuses heavily on California and the Sun Belt. Golden State secured a whopping 18 spots on the list, followed by Florida with 13 offers.

“Yelp's 100 Best Places to Eat list celebrates the must-visit local restaurants in the United States,” said Tara Lewis, Yelp trends expert. “This year’s list takes into account the unique tastes of our users and highlights the beloved hidden gems of local communities.”

First place goes to Tumerico, a vegan and vegetarian restaurant in Tucson, Arizona. Chef and owner Wendy Garcia reportedly started selling tamales at a local farmers market.

“Yelpers regularly keep an eye on the chalkboard menu, which changes daily based on seasonal availability, such as salsa made from Tucson-grown chiltepin chiles and pitaya (Mexican dragon fruit) or nopalitos (made from prickly pear cactus),” the survey announcement says.

The website, which is based on user-generated content, has been around for 20 years now. The list is created by analyzing countless reviews, but ultimately receives final curation from Yelp's “community managers,” who work with both Yelp's star reviewers – known as Yelp Elite – and local business owners.

Number two on the list is Menya Rui, a ramen joint in St. Louis, number three Sunny Side Kitchen, a breakfast spot in Escondido, California, and number four, an Ethiopian restaurant, GS Cafe, in California's Inland Empire.

New York's only entry is at the bottom at number 47 – CHILI, on E. 37th St. between Fifth and Madison. It's one of many Sichuan-style restaurants that have popped up in Midtown in recent years.

The 10 Best Restaurants in the United States in 2024

  • Sunny Side Kitchen, Escondido, California.

  • Adela's Country Eatery, Kaneohe, HI

The list consciously avoids fine dining—according to the website, more than 85% of the restaurants on the list will let you dine for less than $30 per person.

Yelp's faux pas in Gotham comes as travel guide publisher Time Out's globe-trotting followers named New York the best city in the world for 2024.

“While no city is perfect, the results speak for themselves that despite some challenges, New Yorkers love their city just the way it is,” Time Out editor Shaye Weaver told The Post.
