Whoopi Goldberg Says Oscar Didn't Snub Margot Robbie and 'Barbie' Director

Sao Paulo

Actress Whoopi Goldberg weighed in on the controversy surrounding “Barbie’s” Oscar nominations on social media. The film received eight nominations, but was eliminated from the competition for best director and best actress. The absence prompted network users to criticize voters, saying Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were snubbed at the ceremony.

For the artist, however, the Oscar did not go past the film, which is the highestgrossing film of 2023. “Everyone can’t win, you can’t get everything you want,” said Whoopi during an appearance on the American show The View.

“There are no snubs. This is something to keep in mind: Not everyone wins a prize, and that is subjective. Films are subjective. Movies you love may not be loved by voters.” [no Oscar].”

Although the film lost nominations in both categories, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie are still vying for statuettes for “Barbie” at this year's awards ceremony. While the director competes with her husband Noah Baumbach in the adapted screenplay category, the actress will be among the producers who will receive the award if the film wins the Oscar for Best Picture.

But the lack of awards for best actress and best director led to angry reactions, including from the nominated actors. Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera, who are vying for the Oscar for supporting actor and actress respectively for the film, expressed disappointment with voters in their reactions to their nominations.

Hillary Clinton was also outraged by the result. The former US Secretary of State wrote a message of support for Gerwig and Robbie on X, the old Twitter, this Wednesday (24).
