On Saturday, shortly after midnight, emergency services were alerted by several emergency calls to 911 about the incident near the intersection of Rue Saint-Roch and Avenue Querbes.

“When police arrived on scene they found the victim, a man, in the taxi. He was injured by at least one bullet in his upper body. Paramedics performed resuscitation maneuvers on the victim, but unfortunately his death was pronounced at the scene,” said officer Caroline Chèvrefils, spokesperson for the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM).

The victim's identity was initially unknown.

“Initial information indicates that one or more suspects shot at the victim, who was on board the taxi vehicle, and then fled before police arrived,” said Officer Chèvrefils. There were no arrests.

Witnesses were met by investigators and also had to check whether there were surveillance cameras in the area that could have captured images of the crime.

This is the third murder on the island of Montreal since the beginning of the year.

The investigation was transferred to the SPVM's Major Crimes Unit and forensic identification technicians were called to the scene.

A large fence was built in the area. Avenue Querbes was closed between Rue Jarry and Rue Jean-Talon.
