When social worker Isabel Melo, 54, watched the 27yearold girl take the stage at the first edition of the summer festival in 1999, she had no idea that she would become the Ivete Sangalo of today, but she was already hoping for it. He became a fan after the first song and hasn't missed the singer's performances since. This Saturday (27) was no different: Isabel danced and sang the entire repertoire and was present at Palco Cais to see the muse at the Salvador Summer Festival.
“Ivete is Ivete, right? She brings that Bahian spirit, irreverence and rock,” he says. “And she's already wonderful, but for this moment when the festival turns 25 and she turns 30 in her career, it seems like she had a different preparation. I feel like she really wants to celebrate this moment. And we want to celebrate together as a public,” he adds.
The stories of Ivete Sangalo and the summer festival are connected. The only artist to appear at all editions, she first sang on the Exhibition Park stage while still with Banda Eva. Today, at 51 years old and 30 years into her career, the artist delivered an hourlong solo show with the theme “Bahia is a luxury.” For the singer, this luxury is expressed in every way.
“The people, the place, the lineage, the culture, the strength of the people, the beauty of this place that doesn't exist anywhere else in the world. Bahia is a destination that ensures wellbeing. The other places are destinations that you will discover, Bahia is a certainty. And it is also a luxury because culturally we have unparalleled strength, wealth and power,” he says.
Wearing a red and silver outfit reminiscent of timbalada paintings, she opened the show with “Macetando,” one of carnival music's most popular hits. Throughout the performance, the audience sang along to original hits such as Sorte Grande and Dalila, as well as songs from other artists such as Faraó by Margareth Menezes and Banho de Folhas by Luedji Luna.
25yearold architect Diego Castro accompanies the singer at every performance, and this time was no different. Covered in glitter, he enjoyed the show along with three friends. “I’m really looking forward to the 30th anniversary special here in Salvador. She sang songs from the 90s and new, it was wonderful. In addition to the 2024 carnival song, of course “Macetando,” he says.
The couple Ingara, 51, and Ricardo Dantas, 47, collect editions of the festival. On the silver anniversary of the event, what they most expected was Ivete's show. “We passed the arena, before the arena we came here, in the exhibition park. We were there from the beginning. I remember that on the 15th anniversary of Ivete's career, we were in the same place as now and saw the waltz that she danced with 15 singers,” recalls Ingara.
Singer and friend Preta Gil was also excited about the veteran's performance. “It's a special show, the only singer who sang in all editions. And she’s my sister,” he explained.
At the end of the show, in a second performance of “Macetando,” the festival queen invited sevenyearold Daniel Levi, who gained notoriety when he danced with her at the Virada Festival, to the stage.
