Israel is fighting Hamas in the south of the Gaza Strip and the local government sees the risk of medical facilities collapsing

Medical facilities are at risk of collapsing in Khan Younis, the southern Gaza town now at the center of Israel's offensive, the Gaza Strip's health ministry warned on Sunday, as fighting raged in the Palestinian enclave.

Residents said Israeli planes and tanks also attacked areas north of Gaza City where Israel was withdrawing troops. Fighting could be heard in the neighboring towns of Beit Lahiya and Jabalia.

The Israeli military said it was involved in “fierce fighting” in Khan Younis, where troops “eliminated terrorists and located large quantities of weapons.”

The armed wing of Hamas and Islamic Jihad said clashes broke out overnight between militants and Israeli troops in several areas of the enclave. Hamas' armed wing said its fighters destroyed two Israeli tanks in Khan Younis.

The latest fighting comes as U.N. officials and aid groups call on countries to reconsider their decision to suspend funding for the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency, a key source of aid in Gaza.

At least nine countries stopped funding after Israel alleged that a dozen UNRWA workers were involved in the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7.
