Teri Hatcher's 1994 49ers Super Bowl ring, given to her by its owner, has come under fire because it looks completely different than the player's ring.

The Lois & Clark star showed off her jewelry on CBS' “The Talk” last November and said it was a gift from the team's former owner, Edward DeBartolo Jr.

“Honestly, the only finger it still fits is my wedding finger, and since I'm single, I might as well be married to the NFL,” Hatcher said on the show.

Before becoming an actress, Hatcher was a cheerleader for the San Francisco 49ers in 1984. The team will play the Detroit Lions in the NFL Conference Championship game on Sunday night – which has led to renewed questions about Hatcher's ring.

During the interview on The Talk, she explained how she became close to the owner when former 49ers quarterback Steve Young appeared on an episode of Lois & Clark.

Speculation has increased as her diamond-encrusted ring appeared to be missing the team's name, compared to the player's ring, which had it engraved on the top and bottom.

Super Bowl ring jewelers Jostens and Hatcher couldn't give SF Gate insight into the stark difference, but J. Gorman Fine Jewelry offered some clues to the secret.

Jessica Gorman, who works at the jeweler located across the street from the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, said, “Stylistically, the placement of the diamond looks similar.”

Do you think her ring is fake?

“I customize World Series rings for the people who get them from the Hall of Fame, and they're not always the same,” Gorman told SF Gate, which examined the validity of Hatcher's ring for a recent story.

Compared to the player's ring, Gorman noted that Hatcher's ring contained far more diamonds, estimating that it contained four to five carats.

A listing of the solid 10-karat yellow gold ring on Golden Auctions revealed that DeBartolo was “so proud of the achievement that he gifted a handful of rings to close family members.”

One of the chic rings, set with 49 diamonds, sold for $26,180 and had a minimum bid of $7,500.

Gorman added that Hatcher's ring was most likely made with a computer-animated design that allows for customization, including the removal of text.

The process, also called “lost wax,” occurs when wax is melted and then molten gold is injected. There are no records of rings similar to Hatcher's, so it is unclear exactly how many were made.

“So I'm sure they presented her with something that they knew or expected she would like,” Gorman added.

Hatcher said before she received her ring, the NFL team invited her and her parents to the Super Bowl, where they defeated the San Diego Chargers 49-26.

In addition to her role in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Hatcher also portrayed Sidra Holland in the American sitcom Seinfeld.

She appeared in several episodes, but is best known for her scene in the 19th episode of the fourth season, in which she goes on a date with Jerry Seinfeld.

Jerry's ex-girlfriend and friend Elaine Benes, played by Julia-Louis Dreyfus, further suggested that his date had breast implants. He then had Elaine spy on Holland in the gym's sauna to see whether or not her breasts were fake – which Holland later found out.

Hatcher's character then stormed out of Jerry's apartment before returning and saying, “And by the way, they're real and they're spectacular.”

Last year, a former writer on the hit series revealed that staff were actively avoiding cast members like Hatcher due to the messy behind-the-scenes drama.

Author Patty Lin said, “We usually only saw the cast at table readings, where we sat quietly in the back and tried not to make eye contact with Teri Hatcher.”

In 2013, Hatcher dismissed rumors that she had a falling out with the Desperate Housewives crew after it was reported that her co-stars Vanessa Williams, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria sent the TV draw a parting gift without her knowledge had.

“This crew knows I would have jumped in front of a bus for them at any moment,” she said.

“I have been extremely generous over these eight years, and every crew member will tell you that, so it doesn’t matter what anyone writes.”
