Defense Minister Tanner “Security policy must be thought of more broadly”
Vienna (OTS) – The Directorate for Defense Policy and International Relations of the Federal Ministry of Defense invited people to the presentation of the publication “Risk Image 2024 – World out of joint” at the Raiffeisen Forum on Monday, January 29, 2024. As part of the event, Austria's risk framework for the next twelve to 18 months at national, European and international level was presented.
Minister of Defense, Klaudia Tanner: “Last year, international security and defense policy once again faced major challenges. It is, therefore, necessary to think about security policy more broadly, be it the sustainability of our economic system, critical infrastructures or social polarization. The Federal Army, its soldiers and the Federal Ministry of Defense are an integral part of a defensive democracy and we make our contribution to the sustainable security of Austrian democracy. The risk framework for 2024 is, therefore, an important contribution to the expansion of this discourse. I would therefore like to thank all the authors and experts who, by publishing the Risk Framework 2024, are making an important contribution to developing awareness of security policy in Austria.”
After the opening of the event by Major General Erwin Hameseder, Commissioner of the Armed Forces for the Militia, and the main speech by Minister of Defense Klaudia Tanner, the head of the Directorate of Defense Policy and International Relations, Major General Peter Vorhofer, presented the table of risk for 2024. During the event, high-level experts discussed the main challenges, which were also discussed in the publication.
The risk picture basically names and assesses challenges at a global level, in the European environment, for the European Union and risks for Austria. Expert presentations focused in particular on the regions of Eastern Europe, Africa, the Near and Middle East and the Western Balkans, which are of particular importance for Austrian and European security. Major General Bruno Hofbauer drew military-strategic conclusions and Arnold Kammel, Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense, drew conclusions for the security and defense policy of Austria and the Federal Army.
The risk picture of the Federal Ministry of Defense has been published in publication since 2015. As part of the risk picture event, key statements from the publication are presented every year in order to provide information on the overall security situation and increase the awareness of the security risks in Austria.
