'I was angry': Ed O'Neill has 'castigated' his 'Married With Children' co-star Amanda Bearse for not being invited to her same-sex wedding

Ed O'Neill regrets falling out with his former “Married… With Children” co-star Amanda Bearse, 14 years after he attacked her for not inviting him to her 2010 wedding to camera technician Carrie Schenken.

Life imitated art, as on the Fox sitcom Al Bundy, the 77-year-old actress's sleazy patriarch, was the nemesis of the 65-year-old actress's feminist neighbor, Marcy Rhoades D'Arcy.

'In these days, [gay marriage] “It was a novelty, it was new,” Ed said on the Jan. 18 episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson's podcast “Dinner's On Me.”

'And [Amanda] didn't invite me to the wedding. And my feelings were hurt. And when I asked her about it, she said, “Well, it was a difficult decision.” And I thought, “Are you confusing me with Al Bundy?” I didn't say that, but that's how I felt. “What do you mean you think I’m a Neanderthal or something?”

“So, I was angry. If I had to do it over again, I would have said, “Amanda, all the best. It's your decision, it's your wedding.” But instead I lashed out and said a joke, but it was a mean joke. “That’s my biggest regret about it, I didn’t handle it well at all, I know that.”

O'Neill revealed to the TV Academy back in 2013 that his inappropriate joke came after the Florida-born, Georgia-based lesbian said she was afraid he would “giggle” as she and Carrie walked down the aisle of the church with their clothes on went tuxedos.

“I started laughing and she said, 'Look!'” the four-time SAG Award winner recalled.

“And I said, ‘Well, you know why? Because it's damn funny and I won't be the only one who thinks that.” But it was funny. She was wearing a little white tuxedo and I thought that was funny. But in other words, she may not have been wrong to exclude me.'

And while Ed believes the feud originally stemmed from a controversial cover of TV Guide, Amanda believed it had more to do with the changing power dynamic on the set of Married… With Children after she starred at 31 directed episodes.

“I followed the knocking rule: If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.” I will share [O’Neill] “I was dissatisfied toward the end of the series, and that affected everything, and that's why the show didn't air with a grand finale,” Bearse said at GalaxyCon Raleigh in 2018.

“I was ready to go. I loved the character, but she just wasn't fun anymore. At this point, I was directing most of the episodes for the last two seasons. So my job was a little different. So I had a little more to say about things. So when they weren't doing well, I said, “You know, that's not okay.” So there's no love lost. Yes, [but he’s a] great actor.'
