Two young men were detained in Russia on suspicion of sabotage on behalf of Ukraine. The two 17-year-old suspects were arrested in the town of Dolgoprudny near Moscow, police said on Tuesday, according to state news agency Tass. They were taken into custody on charges of sabotage. The maximum penalty for the crime is up to 20 years in prison, depending on the severity.

According to investigators, the teenagers carried out an attack on the Russian railway network. One of the two had already been contacted online by a Ukrainian supporter. He convinced the teenager to carry out the attack for $150. With the help of his friend, the suspect set fire to a box of railway equipment at a suburban Moscow railway station.

Repeated attacks on railway lines

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Russian authorities have repeatedly reported attacks on railway lines. Military sites were also targeted. Kiev largely denies responsibility for this, but supports attacks on the Russian railway network. From a Ukrainian perspective, Moscow is using railway lines to transport troops and fuel as part of its offensive.

In December, a Belarusian man was arrested in Russia for placing explosives on two trains crossing Siberia. Authorities also blamed Ukraine for this. (APA/AFP)
