Michelle Yeoh's Star Trek film Section 31 officially begins production, with the Oscar winner leading the cast alongside the legendary British soap actor

Production on Michelle Yeoh's Star Trek spin-off film Star Trek: Section 31 officially began in Toronto this week.

The Oscar-winning actress, 61, reprises her role as Empress Philippa Georgiou as she joins a secret branch of Starfleet.

Michelle, who originally played the character in Star Trek: Discover, leads the star-studded cast, which also includes former EastEnders star Robert Kazinsky.

Robert rose to fame in the BBC soap as Sean Slater from 2006-2009, before briefly reprising the role in 2019. He found success across the pond, having starred opposite Ryan Gosling in Marvel's Captain Marvel and The Gray Man.

The new film follows Michelle's character as she leads a crew tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets while confronting the sins of her past.

Executive producer Alex Krutzman said, “And we’re off to the races!” “We welcome our incredible cast of new characters to join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the Trek universe.”

This comes after actress Michelle expressed her disappointment that Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were both excluded from the Oscars.

During her appearance on the Today show, the Malaysian actress opened up about the couple's unexpected omissions from the Best Director and Best Actress categories.

When asked about their feelings about the 33-year-old “Babylon” star and the 40-year-old Barbie director not receiving credit for their summer blockbuster, which grossed over a billion dollars at the global box office, the Everything Everywhere All at Once star admits it screwed her, surprise.

“You know, joy and disappointment seem to go hand in hand,” Yeoh told Hoda Kotb. “For us it’s just that there aren’t enough nominations.”

She continued, “The only attitude is that it's so competitive out there and there's no guarantee because you're not the only voter, you know. It's rampant.”

“Thank God the movie was nominated for Best Picture.” But you think, “How do you get nominated for Best Picture but not for Best Director and not for Best Actress?” she asked.

Last year, Michelle made history when she became the first Asian woman to win an Oscar for Lead Actress.

Margot and Greta's snub sparked immediate outrage on social media and drew sharp criticism from Barbie stars who received nominations for their supporting roles, including Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera.

Even Hillary Clinton chimed in on Instagram to send a supportive message to the stars.

“Greta and Margot, while it can be painful to win at the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you,” wrote the former foreign minister, 76. “You are both so much more than Kenough.”

America told Variety it was “incredibly disappointing” that Gerwig and Robbie weren't nominated for the Best Director and Best Actress awards.

“Greta did pretty much everything a director could do to deserve it,” Ferrera explained. “Creating this world and turning something that had no inherent value to most people into a global phenomenon.” “It's disappointing not to see her on this list.”
