An Israeli diplomat's 19-year-old teenage son sobs in a mugshot after “riding his motorcycle into a police officer in Florida because he hates traffic” – a video shows him mentioning his father by name as police stopped him just a few weeks earlier

  • Avraham Gil, 19, was arrested Saturday in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida
  • He was released after his lawyer requested diplomatic immunity
  • The teenager has a history of traffic violations and a sign that says “PLSCHASE”

The teenage son of an Israeli diplomat was seen sobbing in a mugshot after he was arrested for running over a police officer with his motorcycle.

Avraham Gil, 19, was arrested Saturday in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida – a suburb of Miami – after he intentionally ran over a police officer on his motorcycle, causing him to suffer an “incapacitating” leg injury, according to authorities.

A police officer was conducting a traffic stop on Collins Avenue when he saw Gil weaving through traffic and motioned for him to stop, but the teen continued driving and hit him, according to the incident report.

The officer then grabbed Gil off his bike and took him to the ground before arresting him.

Gil then apologized and allegedly told officers that he didn't mean to hit the officer but was weaving through lanes because “he hates waiting behind traffic.”

Although Gil had at least two encounters with police in just two months, he was released on his own recognizance after his lawyer argued that his father Eli Gil, a diplomat at the Israeli consulate in Miami, had diplomatic status.

The State Department states that “Family members who are members of the household of diplomatic agents enjoy exactly the same privileges and immunities as supporting diplomatic agents.”

These privileges include complete immunity from the criminal jurisdiction of the host country's courts – unless the sending state waives it.

After Gil's arrest, Local 10 uncovered the teen's previous encounters with police, including a license plate that read “Please Pursue,” which seemed to indicate a pattern of traffic misconduct.

Gil's license plate is seen during one of his interactions with the police. The sign says “PLS CHASE”.

Gil was stopped for traffic violations on Dec. 31, and video of the encounter shows him telling an officer his father was a diplomat.

“Should I call him?” The teenager can be heard asking the officer.

Miami Shores police tried to stop the teen again on Jan. 14, but he continued driving, and Miami Shores police do not prosecute traffic violations.

Gil is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting an officer with violence.

The diplomat's son is also accused of driving without a license plate or license.

His next court date is February 26th.
