NHL in Quebec: Pierre Karl Péladeau is prepared for all eventualities

Quebecor big boss Pierre Karl Péladeau remains interested in taking part in the return of NHL hockey to Quebec.

The businessman reiterated his interest in TVA Sports during a brief interview on the sidelines of the All-Star Game in Toronto on Saturday.

According to him, there are still good conditions for the Nordiques to return to Quebec.

“We have a world-class amphitheater (a really passionate audience) to follow the Nordic countries, the economic community with Minister (Éric) Girard who went to New York (…) an economy in full swing, the unemployment rate. “Low,” he listed.

“And I cannot but mention Quebecor, which has significant financial resources but also the ability to promote this event,” he also recalled.

A consortium?

Mr. Péladeau also does not rule out the idea of Quebecor allying with other companies or businessmen to bring back the Nordiques.

“This is a good idea, and it is not an original formula: given the value of franchises in all professional sports, we are seeing this more and more often,” he stressed.

However, he was cautious about his potential partners.

“It is certainly premature to say who could be part of a consortium, we can still have a small idea, but I will still remain discreet on this issue,” he said. But there are also important companies there whose headquarters are in Quebec.”

He's also not opposed to the idea of working with an owner who wants to move an existing NHL franchise to Quebec.

“Of course and we want to share in his success,” he said. As a major broadcaster: TVA and its entire organization are the leading broadcaster in Quebec. There are some trying to pick us up, but as someone else would say, they better get up early!”
