Sunrise is using a brilliant tactic to attract “more Melbourne viewers” to the breakfast show

Sunrise is already Australia's highest rated breakfast television program.

But it appears the Sydney-based show is trying to build its audience in Melbourne.

Viewers were surprised on Wednesday as popular newsreader Edwina Bartholomew reported live on the storms that devastated the southern capital overnight.

“Eddy is an outstanding reporter in this field. “I did a great job this morning,” an insider wrote on industry blog Media Spy.

“Good to see,” another added.

“A few weeks ago they wouldn’t have sent her here. Apparently they are trying to win back the viewers in Melbourne.'

The speculation comes after Seven announced that Neil Mitchell and Peter Daicos, two well-known Melbourne stars, would soon be joining Brekkie Central.

Mitchell, 72, who stepped down from 3AW last September after 30 years, will appear on Sunrise from Thursday and provide his commentary on politics and public affairs.

“I've expressed months of pent-up opinions and am ready to share them with the Sunrise audience.” “I'm really excited to be back,” Mitchell said in a statement.

“There's a lot happening in Melbourne that sets the pace for the nation and I hope to keep up with it… There will be opinions, debates and news, but there will also be fun.”

Meanwhile, footy star Peter Daicos will join Sunrise as an AFL insider to comment on the 2024 competition.

The show was rocked last year after longtime host David “Kochie” Koch retired.

But it has remained stable as Koch's successor, Matt “Shirvo” Shirvington, shares the desk with Natalie Barr, who has been part of the Sunrise team for two decades.
