Russell Crowe recalled breaking both of his legs while filming a scene for his 2010 film Robin Hood.
During a recent interview with People magazine, the 59-year-old actor revealed that he didn't know he had broken his legs until a decade after what he initially thought was a “little mishap” on the set of the action film .
“I jumped from a castle portcullis onto rock-hard, uneven ground,” Crowe told the outlet. “We should have prepared the ground and dug in a base, but we were in a hurry to get the shot in the fading light.”

The Oscar winner recalled that before jumping, he was worried about the construction of the stunt moments.

“With hundreds of extras nearby, arrows flying and firepots setting the castle on fire, there was no retreat,” Crowe said. “As I jumped, I remember thinking, 'This is going to hurt.' “

The New Zealand native told People that he tried to land on the balls of his feet to better absorb the impact. However, Crowe recalled that when he landed he felt like his heels hit the ground first.
“It was like an electric shock went through my body,” Crowe said. “We've shot a big film, so you just fight through it, but the last month of this work was very difficult. There were some weeks where even walking was a challenge.”

Despite the ongoing pain, Crowe continued filming Robin Hood. He told People that he “never discussed the injury with production, never took a day off because of it, I just kept going to work.”

Crowe recalled feeling “very strange pains” in his lower legs and decided to see a doctor for an MRI and X-ray scan.
“I thought it wasn’t anything serious,” he told People. “After working through a long winter in New York, my body was simply lacking exercise and sunshine.”

However, Crowe said he was shocked when his doctor looked at the X-rays and then asked him when he broke his legs.

“Apparently he could see remnants of fractures in both tibia bones,” Crowe recalled. “To refresh my memory, he said, 'Would that have been 10 years ago?'”

Crowe said he immediately remembered the incident that occurred on the set of “Robin Hood.”

“Apparently I finished this film with two broken legs,” he noted. “Everything for art. No cast, no splints, no painkillers, just keep working and over time they healed themselves.”
In retrospect, the actor realized that he had taken a year off after completing production on Robin Hood. He didn't work again until he took on the role of Jor-El, Superman's father, in the 2013 film Man of Steel.

“Looking back, I obviously knew something was wrong,” Crowe said.

He continued: “Being the Kryptonian father of Superman meant six months of incredibly intense physical training. Between the time off and this training, things sorted themselves out.”

Crowe played the title character in Robin Hood, a retelling of the legendary outlaw's story directed by Ridley Scott and also starring Cate Blanchett, William Hurt, Mark Strong, Mark Addy, Oscar Isaac, Danny Huston, Eileen Atkins and Max von Sydow.
The two-time Golden Globe winner is currently starring as a US Air Force drone pilot in the new action thriller “Land of Bad” alongside Liam Hemsworth, Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle and Milo Ventimiglia.
“Land of Bad” was released in theaters on February 16th.
