The Argentine province, which includes Malvinas, rejects Cameron's visit

Just over a month after meeting Milei at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the British foreign secretary landed at Mount Pleasant air base in the archipelago administered by the United Kingdom, which fought a war with Argentina over its sovereignty in 1982.

During his visit, Cameron said he hoped the islands would want to remain under British administration “for a long time, possibly forever”, according to the Press Association (PA).

Milei's government did not comment on Cameron's visit. “This is a new and unacceptable provocation that has not occurred in 30 years and that must be rejected by the national government,” said opposition MP Santiago Cafiero, chancellor of the previous government, in Buenos Aires.

Announcing the trip, Britain's Foreign Office said yesterday that Cameron would reaffirm “the UK's commitment to defending the islands' right to selfdetermination” during his visit.

The Falkland Islands “are a valuable part of the British family and we are clear that the issue of sovereignty will not be up for discussion as long as they wish to remain part of that family,” the Chancellor said in a statement released by the British government service on this Sunday.

Words from Milei

The meeting between Milei and Cameron in Davos on January 17 was described as “excellent” by the Argentine president. During the election campaign, Milei said: “We had a war that we lost and we must make every effort to regain the islands through diplomatic channels.”
