Elections leave their mark in El Salvador

“President Nayib Bukele agreed to what I could call a popular referendum on his security policies, thereby achieving a devastating, pulverizing electoral victory, as did the data, evidence and indicators of the Territorial Control Plan (PCT),” Ricardo Sosa, criminologist, commented this Monday in an analysis in Diario El Salvador.

The population that took part in the elections gave a yes, an approval, a message that we want the PCT security strategy to be maintained and improved, said the expert.

The results published by the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) confirm that Salvadorans, although concerned about their economic situation, have chosen the government to consolidate its security achievements and be given the opportunity, in a second term, to face the challenges of the economy. This is mainly due to the lack of proposals from the opposition.

But despite evidence that Bukele and his party won the elections, opposition parties are calling for the parliamentary elections to be annulled.

The Arena, VAMOS and Nuestro Tiempo groups joined forces the day before to submit a brief to the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) in which they called for the annulment of the parliamentary elections of last February 4 and for the repetition of this electoral process.

The plaintiffs, Carlos García Saade, president of Arena, and deputy César Reyes, Claudia Ortiz of VAMOS and Andy Failer, president of Nuestro Tiempo, said they had evidence of 69 irregularities in this electoral process and therefore requested the annulment of the election.

The leaders of the three parties insisted that any irregularities in the electoral process needed to be cleared up, even though they had won seats in parliament. Based on the data of the final audit of the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE), the Arena party won two MPs (San Salvador and La Libertad) and VAMOS won one MP (San Salvador).

However, demand is difficult to thrive and the new assembly, which will be installed on May 1, maintains a similar tone to the current one. According to academic Oscar Picardo, there should be “no further debate or criticism” in the assembly; Anyone who dares to criticize the president faces civil and political death.”

Among the marks left by the last trial, according to various analyses, is re-election, which, according to Picardo, “opened the door to another dimension in which you are able to do other things that you shouldn't do. “
