“Oppenheimer” and “The Bear” were among the top winners at Saturday's 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards, an industry awards show with all-performance categories that often provides a glimpse into possible Oscars outcomes.
The ceremony, held at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles and broadcast live for the first time on Netflix, honored the best film and television performances of 2023. Winners are selected by the union's more than 119,000 members on the SAG Awards website.
This year's SAG Awards are the first since members went on strike for 118 days last year and struck a deal with more than 350 production companies that promised increased wages, improved working conditions and protection from the threat Artificial intelligence in performances.
The Life Achievement Award, announced before the ceremony, was presented to Barbra Streisand. She received a standing ovation for her acceptance speech, in which she talked about why she decided to pursue her dreams even though she didn't look like other film actresses at the time.
“This fantasy world was much more pleasant than anything I have experienced. I didn’t like the reality,” she said. “…It is truly a privilege to be part of this profession.”
