Your phone contract is expiring and you plan to sell it on or give it away when you get a new one? Here's what you need to do before abandoning your device.
1. Make sure the phone is unlocked
If you bought your phone before 2017, it could be blocked. That means it will be impossible to use it with any provider other than the one that originally sold it to you, be it Bell, Rogers, Videotron or even Fido.
Since 2017, providers are not only no longer allowed to lock devices, but they also have to allow you to unlock them for free.
2. Create a backup of your device
Backup is an important step to keep the data on your phone. Whether it's your contacts, your photos or even your messages.
This backup can then be transferred to your new device.
3. Clear phone data
To ensure that the person who receives your old phone does not have access to your data, you must delete it by resetting it.
“Resetting the phone will restore its basic settings, which are the same as those on the day of purchase. This process will delete all data stored on the phone. “It will be like new when it leaves the factory,” says the website of French telecommunications company Orange.
Note that this process may take a long time and the phone must be fully charged or plugged in.
