Two Hezbollah members were killed in an Israeli strike in Syria

Two members of Lebanon's Hezbollah movement were killed in an Israeli attack on a truck in Syria near the border with Lebanon early Sunday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH).

Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks in Syria since the civil war erupted in that neighboring country in 2011, mostly targeting groups affiliated with Iran, including Hezbollah, allies of the Syrian regime, as well as the Syrian army.

These attacks have increased amid hostilities in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.

“Israel fired a rocket at a truck […] near the Syrian-Lebanese border in an area between the provinces of Homs and the suburbs of Damascus,” the Observatory reported.

The attack resulted in the “death of at least two Hezbollah members,” he said.

Syrian state media did not report the attack and Hezbollah had no immediate comment.

Damascus and its suburbs are regularly targeted by Israeli attacks. The latest attack hit a residential building in the capital on Wednesday, killing three people, including a Syrian and two foreigners, according to the Observatory.

On February 10, OSDH reported the deaths of three people in Israeli attacks on a building west of Damascus, in an area where “Lebanese Hezbollah and other pro-Iranian groups are present.”

Since the war between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas in the Gaza Strip began on October 7, Hezbollah has announced the deaths of at least 14 fighters killed by Israeli fire in Syria.

The Israeli army said on February 3 that it had “attacked more than 50 Hezbollah targets on the ground and in the air” since October 7.

Israel rarely comments on its attacks in Syria, but has repeatedly indicated that it will not allow Iran to expand its presence in Syria.
