The German Defense Minister rules out sending troops to Ukraine

VIENNA, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) — German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on Tuesday ruled out sending German ground troops to Ukraine, after French President Emmanuel Macron suggested on Monday that the Europeans could do so.

“Soldiers on site are not an option for the Federal Republic of Germany,” Pistorius said today at a press conference after meeting his Austrian counterpart Klaudia Tanner in Vienna.

Tanner also described Macron’s comments as “a worrying sign.”

Macron told a meeting of European leaders on Monday that despite the lack of an official consensus among European leaders, the possibility of sending Western troops to Ukraine “should not be ruled out,” adding that the West will do everything to ensure that Russia does not win the current conflict.
