UNITED STATES – They continue their journey (almost) peacefully. Not surprisingly, the Republican Donald Trump and the Democrat Joe Biden both won the primaries of their respective parties organized for the presidential elections this Tuesday, February 27, in the state of Michigan. But they will have to learn lessons from it.
For former President Donald Trump, this very large victory (around 66% versus 29%) only strengthens his position as leader within the conservative party against Nikki Haley, who does not want to give up. But he needs to take a closer look at his score among certain demographics, particularly college graduates, where it may be weaker or even rejected outright, the Associated Press points out.
As for the presidential candidate for re-election, Joe Biden, he is reassured… half. In fact, a campaign for a protest vote has been launched because of his foreign policy in the Middle East. Some of his voters believe that he is too close to Israel and that he does not sufficiently denounce the shelling of the Gaza Strip.
While defeat would have been largely unlikely anyway due to the non-existence of his only Democratic rival, Dean Phillips, members of his campaign are carefully monitoring the number of ballots marked “non-binding.”
The protest movement is successful
The group that led the insurrection wanted to mobilize at least 10,000 voters in Michigan to send a “strong and clear message.” At the time of writing, the anti-war and pro-Gaza group said it had exceeded its goal and had already received more than 11,000 protest votes.
This strong mobilization could send a strong message to future primary voters. And further destabilize the tenant of the White House, who is criticized because of his age and is in a bad position against Donald Trump in the November election. The two candidates are expected to represent their respective parties on November 5th.
Michigan will also be a very important state for the presidential election. It is one of the “swing states,” meaning it is not taken over by either party and the results in this state can tip the scales in favor of one side or the other at the national level. For example, in 2020, Joe Biden beat Donald Trump by just 150,000 votes, narrowly shifting the big vote in Michigan and then the general election. History could either repeat itself in 2024 or have a completely different outcome.
