For a total of 4,835 women and men who were born on a leap day in Austria, the recorded day of their birth is back on the calendar this year.
186 four-year-old children born in Austria can expect their “first real birthday” on February 29, 2024, Statistics Austria announced upon request. For a total of 4,835 women and men who were born on a leap day in this country, the recorded day of their birth is back on the calendar this year.
Every four years is a leap year in which the calendar counts 366 days. In 2024, February will not only have 28 days, but it will also have an additional 29 days to align the calendar and seasons again. This prevents the start of spring from being in January a few hundred years from now. In Austria, this affects a total of 4,835 “leap year children” who were born on February 29th – including 186 children who, for the first time after waiting four years, do not have to choose another day for their birthday.
Three percent of children in leap years
Of the 6,327 girls and boys born in Austria in February 2020, children in leap years account for just under three percent. Across Austria, “leap year children” represent just 0.8% of all those who can celebrate their birthday in February (569,916 people).
The federal state with the highest birth rate on this day is Lower Austria, with currently 1,024 people. In second place is Upper Austria with 897, followed closely by Vienna with 827. Only 167 people who were born in Burgenland can expect their “real” birthday this year.
