MacKinnon and Makar are rewriting the history of the Avalanche… and the Nordiques

Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar continue their success with the Colorado Avalanche and were able to add a few more lines to their already full resumes on Tuesday night.

With a 5-1 win over the Dallas Stars, the two men wrote a new chapter in the history of the franchise formerly based in Quebec. MacKinnon registered one assist, joining Peter Forsberg for third all-time at the club with 538 assists. For anyone interested, it is Joe Sakic who dominates with 1016 assists, ahead of Peter Stastny (668). The Avs forward also scored at least one point in each of his first 29 home games this season. This is the sixth-longest streak in National Hockey League history; The 40 mark belongs to Wayne Gretzky and dates back to 1988-1989, his first season with the Los Angeles Kings.

“It's just remarkable. We talked about it. I think it shows his consistency, he plays like that night after night. I have to say he was incredible again,” head coach Jared Bednar told NHL.com about his protégé MacKinnon, who is second on the Bettman circuit with 98 points this year.

The leader among the defenders

As for Makar, his assist against the Stars brought his career points total to 308. For a defenseman, this is a new high point in Nordiques and Avalanche history. Tyson Barrie (307) is now second.

“I said it the other time when he tied up Barrie. I thought about his age [25 ans] “And I said to myself that he still has to play a lot of hockey,” the pilot recalled. That is a very good concession. There have been great guards for a long time and to be at the top of this list is very impressive, especially since he has a lot of hockey to play, probably the best of his career.

Colorado is trying to catch up with the Winnipeg Jets and Stars, the top two clubs in the Central Division standings with 79 points each. Bednar's men are down two points and have a game in hand against Dallas. On the other hand, the Manitoba representatives are in a better position, having played three fewer games than the Avalanche.
