This Thursday, the funeral of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Aklehha ended with a confrontation between Israeli police and Palestinian citizens carrying the coffin. The altercation took place outside the Jerusalem hospital where the journalist’s body had been kept. According to the Quds News Network news agency, dozens of people were injured in the clashes. In fact, as can be seen in the video, the police charged the people accompanying the coffin, accusing them of throwing stones at them. Also, they attempted to break up the funeral, leading to a moment when the coffin was about to fall to the ground.
The reporter who was assassinated in the early hours of May 11 had covered the Arab-Israeli conflict for two decades and was killed during a shootout in Jenin, West Bank, while covering the military operation for Al Jazeera TV. And although it is still unknown who was behind his death, the Palestinian authorities blame the Israeli forces for the crime. An accusation that the Israeli government initially flatly denied, but now no longer rules out that its army was behind the murder of the journalist. Washington and Brussels are now demanding an investigation to clarify the facts.
