When will elections take place in Venezuela in 2024? Parliament will propose provisional dates

After the opposition organized the primaries in 2023, in which María Corina Machado emerged victorious, Venezuela will now go to the polls again. However, this time this process must be organized by the National Electoral Council (CNE), since the presidential elections must take place in 2024. In this context, since the beginning of the year, citizens have been curious about the date the vote will take place. There are already initial proposals from Parliament to make the elections official.

What is known about the presidential elections in Venezuela?

Jorge Rodríguez, President of Parliament, explained that this entity, dominated by the ruling party, had submitted a request to the electoral authority “which is within the framework established by the Barbados Agreement”. One of the points set out in the pact stipulates that the election must take place within 24 hours “from the second half of 2024”, Although “Some (politicians) preferred a much earlier date for this election.” It is important to highlight that this is already the case “27 dates (provisional) and the National Electoral Council will conduct the technical discussions”. This means that at the moment only the first step has been taken for this year's elections and the proposal will be presented to the CNE on Friday.

What is the Barbados Agreement?

On October 17, 2023, the ruling party and the Unity Platform, made up of opposition political parties, agreed on two important points regarding the situation in which Venezuela has found itself for several years:

  • Guarantee the correct conduct of the 2024 presidential election
  • Protect the nation's interests in terms of the country's resources abroad such as Citgo and also the defense of the territory in view of the Essequibo conflict.
  • Will María Corina Machado be able to run for the presidential elections?

The idea of the primaries in Venezuela in October 2023 was to elect a single person to oppose Nicolás Maduro. On this occasion, the people overwhelmingly elected María Corina Machado and therefore it was planned that she would be the one to lead a political contest against the current regime. However, the politician is disqualified by Venezuela's Supreme Court and is not allowed to take part in any CNE elections. Nevertheless, the leader of the Vente Venezuela party remains steadfast in the election campaign: “Nothing and no one will distract us from the election path. (…) We are prepared for any scenario and we are sure that we will take part in any scenario that they give us. “María Corina is the candidate, she will be the candidate and she will be the president.”said Biagio Pilieri, political leader of Machados of the same party.
