The Northeastern Conference said Wednesday it is launching an investigation into a brawl between fans in the stands that marred the end of the Wagner-Bryant tournament final in Smithfield, Rhode Island, and led to one arrest.
In a statement Wednesday, NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris said she was “disgusted” by what happened the night before.
“Sports competitions should bring out the best in us. Unfortunately, we didn’t see that last night,” Morris said.

“We will be thoroughly investigating the incredibly disappointing events of last night and will begin an immediate review of our game management policy to address this unruly and disrespectful fan behavior.”
The game was driven by Bryant, who secured his first trip to the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament by defeating Wagner 70–43.
However, before the Bulldogs took the win, the game was delayed by about 30 minutes, with 4:37 left in the second half after a brawl broke out between fans behind Wagner’s bench. A small portion of the seats, mostly occupied by Wagner fans, were located next to Bryant’s student section, and the contentious atmosphere led to a fight that called the local and state police to the court.
None of the players or managers entered the stands, although Wagner defender Will Martinez attempted to do so and was ejected from the game. Several other players had to be held back.
Officials still decided to go 68-32 with Bryant at the time of the stoppage.
The Rhode Island State Police said Wednesday that Massachusetts’ Connor Gleim was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer in the line of duty.
It was the first NEC title for Bryant, who qualified for the postseason in 2012-13 after being promoted to Division I.
