A 76-year-old woman was taking a walk in Toronto late Wednesday morning when she was approached by a man who shot her multiple times in the face with an air rifle for no apparent reason.
Toronto police said at a press conference on Friday that they had managed to arrest a 27-year-old man suspected of being the perpetrator of this unnecessary crime.
It all started shortly after 11:30 a.m. when the victim was walking in the Scarborough neighborhood on the east side of the city and the suspect approached her from behind.
When he reached the woman, the man took out an air rifle and shot her, hitting her in the face and hands. One of the projectiles even shattered the victim's glasses, police noted.
The walker suffered significant injuries, but her life was not in danger. She was back home Friday trying to recover from her physical and mental injuries.
“Obviously she is very traumatized. And she's scared to walk the streets again,” said Inspector Michael Williams.
The suspect, Umer Saad, is a nearby resident who was found using various surveillance cameras. He is charged with, among other things, assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon.
