Number of procedures in the Vatican doubled in 2023

The number of ongoing processes at the Vatican doubled in 2023 compared to the previous year. This was reported by Vatican prosecutor Alessandro Diddi in his address to the Pope at the opening of the Vatican's 95th Judicial Year.

“Last year was marked by important trials, both civil and criminal, which were followed with great attention by the press, including the foreign press,” said Diddi.

In order to cope with the large workload and additional tasks that the Vatican justice system will have to face due to the upcoming Catholic Jubilee Year in 2025, a system for computerized archive management has been introduced at the Vatican, Diddi announced.

The prosecutor highlighted “the credibility” that the Vatican’s jurisdiction managed to achieve “for years” in the international order, despite the Vatican’s non-adherence to the European Union.

The Pope introduced some changes last April to improve the functionality of the justice system. The innovations include a more precise definition of the investigative and law enforcement functions of the position of “Prosecutor of Justice” – this is what the Vatican prosecutor is called.
