“The Bachelor” star Joey Graziadei reassured fans worried about the appearance of his eyes on Instagram.
The 28-year-old TV star, who stars in the current season of the reality dating show, revealed in a video that his “yellow eyes” are caused by Gilbert's syndrome.
“I wanted to come here real quick and talk about something that I see a lot of comments about, which is Joey's yellow eyes,” Graziadei said at the start of the clip he shared on Thursday.

He continued: “To put this into context, I have to go back to my high school days. I was sick for about a week and a half and my mom thought it would be a good idea to go to the doctor.”
“When I went to the doctor. I had a blood work done and the blood work showed that my bilirubin level was very high. That means there could be something wrong with my liver.”
According to the Cleveland Clinic, bilirubin is the yellow pigment in bile.
“You may have high bilirubin levels if your liver has difficulty processing bilirubin into bile or if your bile ducts are blocked,” the medical center's website says. “A high bilirubin level may indicate liver or biliary disease.”

“So we went and I had a liver ultrasound done,” Graziadei recalls. “I went to other doctors. They found that there was nothing necessarily wrong, like hepatitis.”

However, Graziadei said he was diagnosed with Gilbert's syndrome.
According to the Mayo Clinic, Gilbert's syndrome is a “common, harmless liver disease in which the liver does not process bilirubin properly.” The condition is usually genetic and does not require treatment. Gilbert's syndrome causes “occasional yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes, which is due to slightly higher levels of bilirubin in the blood.”

“At the end of the day, I’m told I’m healthy,” Graziadei explained. “It's something that affects the whites of my eyes and causes jaundice, which is why they look a little more yellow.”
He continued: “This is something I want to pay more attention to this year. I want to get my health in order and make sure I'm okay. But I wanted to at least give some background and let you know that to my knowledge, I'm healthy.

“Drinking more fluids is just something I have to pay attention to. It’s even worse when I’m stressed or sleep deprived, which is what happens on a TV show,” he said, smiling. “And I appreciate everyone looking out for me and wondering if I'm OK. But as far as I know I'm doing as well as I can be and I'll continue to look after it. So thank you very much.”

The Pennsylvania native made his debut on The Bachelor franchise as a contestant on Season 20 of The Bachelorette with Charity Lawson. Graziadei made it to the final two, but Lawson picked fellow competitor Dotun Olubeko as the winner.

At the Season 20 finale of “The Bachelorette” in August 2023, Graziadei was named the next star of “The Bachelorette.”
