According to the MetSul portal, which specializes in meteorology, this atmospheric phenomenon occurs in the upper atmosphere during strong storms. The electrical discharge that occurs at the top of the cloud towards space reaches heights of up to about 50 kilometers in less than a second.
“While ordinary lightning excites a mixture of gases in the lower atmosphere to glow white, blue jets excite mainly stratospheric nitrogen to produce its characteristic blue hue,” MetSul adds.

Impressive video of a colleague flying around a storm in which I witnessed a phenomenon that is not seen very often. A socalled “blue jet” can be seen in the upper part of the cumulonimbus.
