King Harald V of Norway had a pacemaker implanted in a Malaysian hospital yesterday, the royal household said in a press release cited by international media.
“The King had a temporary pacemaker implanted at the Sultanah Maliha Hospital in Langkawi. Medical transport to Norway is expected to take place within the next two days,” the statement said. “The pacemaker was implanted due to a low heart rate. The decision was made today and the operation was successful,” the king’s personal physician, Björn Bendz, said yesterday. The sovereign is doing well, but still needs rest, he added.
87-year-old Harald is on a private trip to Malaysia. He was hospitalized on Tuesday due to an infection. The monarch, born on February 21, 1937, ascended the Norwegian throne in 1991. Oslo is a constitutional monarchy.
