“The court hopes that the process that ends with this verdict will bring the victim some peace of mind,” argued Judge Martin Chalifour, emphasizing his “great courage.”

Last week, a judge at the Montreal courthouse handed down a seven-year prison sentence to a 67-year-old man accused of sexual contact with his own daughter. To protect the identity of the complainant, he cannot be named.

The perpetrator is said to have started his crime around 1997, when the child was not even 6 years old. He assaulted her until she was 16.

“His daughter was apparently perceived and used in a utilitarian mode as a sexual object, possibly as a surrogate,” we heard in court.

He was finally caught of his despicable actions in 2019 after his child reported him. As a mother, she “could no longer live with her past.”

Thirty times

She was branded through thirty episodes of fellatio, masturbation and touching imposed by her father.

The victim remains traumatized, among other things, by an attack that occurred when she was a teenager.

The defendant “went to her room […]. During this event, which will last several minutes [la mère de l’enfant] tried to enter the room. The defendant spoke to him through the door as he continued [ses gestes]», explains Judge Chalifour.

The incestuous father's abuse resulted in a “distortion of the emotional bonds” of the victim, who believed “that the attacker's actions were evidence of love.”

“She explains that the attacks led her to use her body to be loved, to engage in toxic romantic relationships, to have difficulties with life, to isolate herself and sometimes to use to forget,” Judge Chalifour emphasized.

He blames the alcohol

The defendant admitted his guilt in the allegations against him, but continued to deny having a “deviant sexual interest.”

“[Il] does not take his share of responsibility. He doesn't question the victim's word, he even expresses his shame at what he did to her. However, he cannot explain the reasons for his actions,” the judge wrote.

The father of five blames his “excessive” alcohol consumption, which sent him “to another planet.” He was reportedly abstinent for three years for health reasons.

“This intoxication may have contributed to the crime, but that does not explain everything,” emphasized Judge Chalifour.
